DMG is used for disk image files on Macintosh computers running Mac OS. This file extension replaces the older brother .IMG which was discontinued during the release of later series of Mac operating systems.
You can open DMG file on Mac, Linux, and Windows operating systems but it will require additional software to be installed on Windows and Linux operating systems. Note that on Windows and Linux you cannot open every DMG file, since there are certain software limitations. On Mac OS you can just double click on the DMG file and it will either open in Finder or launch the installation process of the application inside the DMG file.

Hdiutil is a helpful command line utility for Mac OS which allows to manipulate disk images. With hdiutil you can attach, detach, verify, burn and perform other actions with disk images.
Once application contained in the DMG file is installed it is safe to delete the DMG file. Installed application will not be affected by the deletion of the DMG file.
